The company was founded in 1929 by Rudolf Hell, one of Germany's most important and most productive inventors of the previous century. Nevertheless, the HELL company is generally not well-known.    In the period following WWII, HELL built a number of mechanical cipher machines for the German Army (Bundeswehr), mainly under license from the Boris Hagelin company in Switzerland. In 1981, HELL was taken over by Siemens. In 1990, the graphics-related business was merged with Linotype and became known as Lynotype-Hell AG.
